Side part that follows the hair

A side part sends the top to one side from a clean line. The line can be natural or combed. It need not be shaved.

Shake wet hair and watch where it already splits. That split is the part, or it is the place the part should be moved to. A side part sends the top hair to one side from a clean line. The line can be natural, a break the growth already makes, or combed, a line you set with a comb while the hair is damp. It does not have to be shaved. Shaving it is a hard part, a different request, with a white line that shows every morning.

Put the part where the hair divides when it is wet and left alone for a minute. Forcing it through a cowlick makes a ridge. You will comb that ridge flat, it will rise on the walk to the car, and you will decide the cut failed. The cut did what it was told. The instruction was wrong. A barber can find the real split quickly if you stop managing the hair for a moment at the start. Arrive with product still in it and the split is a fiction. Wash, or at least wet it, before the line is chosen.

The heavy side has to be long enough to reach the place you want it to lie, and the short side has to be short enough that it does not fight back. If both sides are the same length, you do not have a part. You have a middle that drifted, and it will drift again the first time you sweat. This is scissor work on the top. Clippers can set the sideburn and the taper underneath. They should not be the tool that "evens out" the two sides of a part, because even is the opposite of what a part is.

A hard part is optional and it is not a finish. Ask for it only if you want that designed line and you will keep the appointment that maintains it. A grown-out hard part is a pale scar of missing hair until it fills, which is longer than people expect. A combed part grows out by getting softer, which is a kinder failure. If you are unsure, start with the comb. You can shave a line into a working part later. You cannot unshave a line you tried once for a photograph.

The side under the part is usually a taper or a low fade. Too much hair left above the ear and the part has no architecture. The top collapses into the side and the line disappears in profile. Too little, a high skin fade, and the part looks stranded, a polite idea sitting on a bald head. Match them. "Side part on my left, taper, no hard line, short side actually short" is a usable sentence. Add the length you want the heavy side to reach: the outer corner of the brow, the middle of the eye, the top of the ear. A place on your face is clearer than "not too long."

Comb it while it is damp, let it dry in that direction, then break it with your fingers if you do not want it flat. A soaked comb-over will not survive the walk to the car in this humidity. The water evaporates, the hair shrinks or expands according to its type, and the part you glued down with a dripping comb relocates. Damp, not wet. A light cream. Less than the amount that leaves a print on a pillow.

Week one should be easy. If it is not, the placement is wrong and waiting will not fix it. Say so at the next visit, sooner if the ridge is bad enough that you cannot work. Week two and three are the life of a good part: it falls, the taper still holds, you are not performing a styling routine so much as repeating a direction. By week four to six the side is thick and the part looks less decided. That is the booking, not a sign that side parts "do not work" on you. Bulk under the part is what dates it.

Glasses and hats press the part in a line that may not be the line you cut. If you wear either for most of the day, the haircut has to agree with that pressure or you will restyle from scratch at 6 p.m. Mention them. A part set a finger's width away from a glasses arm survives better than a part set directly under it.

Bring one photo of the part from the front and one from the side, and be honest if the hair in the photo is thicker than yours. The line can be copied. The density cannot. Point at what you do not want: the shine, the hard part, the length that would pass your nose. A side part is a small set of decisions. Made in the right order, on dry-enough hair, with the growth instead of against it, it is also the haircut you stop thinking about, which is the result worth booking.
