A short beard, even from ear to ear

A short beard is usually a guard between a 1 and a 3, with the neck and cheeks cleaned. Evenness is the whole job.

Even is the whole job on a short beard. The length is usually a guard between a 1 and a 3, something you can see as a shadow or as a short coat, not as a shape you comb. The neck comes off. The cheeks are cleaned of strays, or given a line you already agreed to. If those borders are wrong, the guard in the middle will not hide them. If the borders are right, small differences in density read as a beard instead of as a mistake.

Going shorter does not fix patches. It can quiet them, because there is less contrast between a bare spot and a short neighbor. Going longer makes the same patches louder. If your cheeks are thin, stay in the short range and keep the outline humble. Do not drop to skin on the cheek to "even it out" and leave the chin long. That is a goatee you did not discuss. Do not fill a thin cheek with a pen. In daylight it looks like a pen.

Use the same direction and the same pressure on both sides. With the grain first. That pass sets one length. A second pass against the grain cuts closer and is how skin that bumps gets a reason to bump. Pressing harder on the cheek that looks fuller is how a home trim goes lopsided: one side becomes a half-guard shorter, and then you chase it until both sides are nearly gone. If one side grows slower, say so. The chair can leave that side alone on the second pass instead of matching it by force.

The corners of the mouth and the mustache are part of the same visit. Hair at the corner grows in a different direction and is easy to leave as a tuft that sticks out of an otherwise even beard. The mustache itself grows faster than the cheeks on a lot of men. A three-week mustache over a two-day beard looks like you forgot a piece. Take the mustache down to the same idea, even if the number is not identical, and clear the hair that hangs over the lip. You should be able to drink from a cup without a filter.

At this length the skin shows, so the skin matters more than a beard oil. A few drops of oil on a week of growth mostly sit there and shine. A light moisturizer on the skin under the hair does the work, especially after the neck and cheeks have been taken closer. If you break out when the shave gets bald, this length is the truce. Stay on the guard. Do not "finish" the short beard with a razor pass you did not ask for. Say no before it happens if your neck has a history.

The chin will look heavier than the cheek even on the same guard, because the hair there is usually denser and often coarser. That is not a mistake to chase with a closer pass only on the chin, unless the difference bothers you in profile. If it does, a light second pass on the densest zone, still with the same guard, is enough. Do not switch guards mid-beard. Two lengths that were not discussed will show as a step under the mouth. Plan on the chair every two or three weeks if you want it to stay this short. A short beard does not grow out into a flattering medium. It grows out into a patchy fourth week you will be tempted to fix in the sink.

At home, one guard, daylight, one pass with the grain, then stop and look. If you missed a spot, you may go back once, lightly. If one side is now shorter, do not correct it by taking the other side down to match. Book, or live with it until it evens. A dirty trimmer pulls and skips, which you will feel as a tug and fix by pressing harder, which is the lopsided cut again. Brush the guard out. And do not detail the cheek line while you are "only taking the length down." Length and line are separate decisions. Mixing them in the sink is how a short beard becomes a smaller face.

Say a number or show a length with two fingers, and say the borders in the same breath. A 2, even, ear to ear. Neck off, curved, above the apple. Cheeks cleaned, not raised. Mustache with it, off the lip. I bump if you go to skin. Then look from the front with your head level. A short beard is forgiven almost everything except being two different lengths. The grow-out is simple: it gets long, you put the same guard back on, and you leave the lines where they were set.
