A scissor cut on top of a fade
Clippers make an even length. Scissors make a shape that can be thicker in one place and softer in another. On top, that difference is the haircut.
A clipper leaves one number. A scissor leaves a decision. Clippers make an even length, which is what you want on the side of a fade and what you often do not want on top. Scissors can leave the front longer than the crown, the corner shorter than the fringe, and a weight line where the hair should bend. On top, that difference is the haircut. An even cap is a different service, and it should be chosen on purpose.
Ask for scissors at the start if your hair lies in more than one direction, if you want a fringe that is not a stump, or if clippers have been leaving you with a flat roof. "Clean up the top" is heard as clippers. Say scissors, and say where the length lives. The brow, the bridge of the nose, a finger above the eyebrow: point. A photo helps if you also say what in the photo you do not want, especially a disconnected shelf or a fringe cut into a straight board.
The work is sections, not a trim of whatever sticks up. Overdirect the hair, and the length lands where you aimed it. Leave it where it grows, and a cowlick will stand up through an even cut no matter how short the guard was. The front can hold weight so it bends. The crown can be shorter so it does not dome. Clipper-over-comb can approximate a length. It cannot place weight. If your hair is thick, this is also how the interior gets cut without turning the outline into the only thing that changed. If your hair is fine, the scissors should be removing ends, not carving holes. Say which problem you have.
It takes longer than a clipper top. That is not a delay and it is not a performance. Cutting the top in ninety seconds is how thick hair stays a block and how fine hair gets a cap that shows scalp at the part. Sit for the sections. If you are in a hurry, say so before the cape is on and choose the even length honestly, instead of asking for a shape and then watching the clock.
You can still have a skin fade, or any other fade, on the side. The tools are for different jobs. The place they meet is the risk. The longest clipper length should hand off to the shortest scissor length without a step you can see when you turn your head. Run a hand over the parietal ridge, above the ear, before you get up. A shelf there means the fade stopped and the scissor work started as two separate haircuts. It is fixable in the chair. It is obvious in the car.
Curls on top follow their own rule inside this same service. Cut them dry, or finish them dry. Wet scissors on a curl spring up, and the fringe you nodded at is gone before you reach the door. Do not thin coils into a mist so they "behave" under the fade. Shape them. A taper from the fade into the curl is the connection. Stretching the top, cutting a straight boy's cut, and calling it done is how the length collapses. Humidity will finish the argument on the sidewalk.
At home, do not pull the fringe down between two fingers and cut across it. You will take more from the middle than from the ends, and you will park a gap above the brow that no comb can hide. If one piece sticks up, take the end of that piece and stop. Do not "blend" the scissor top with the clippers you use on your neck. The blend you are about to make is the shelf. Between visits, comb the hair into the direction it was cut. A scissor shape has a grain. Fighting it with a wet hand every morning is how you decide you hate a cut that was built for a different direction.
If you want a helmet that looks the same every day with no comb, say that too. Effortless and scissors are not always the same sentence. Clipper-over-comb, or a guard on top, may be the honest tool for a head that will not be styled. The result of a scissor cut moves. You will push it, or part it, or let it fall. Tell the chair which of those you will actually do on a Wednesday, and the weight can be left where your hand already goes.
