Long hair, cut so it has a shape

Long hair still needs a cut. Dusting the ends keeps it from becoming one width of damaged points, and the shape is a separate decision.

Ends left for a year are not length. They are damage walking up the strand, and eventually the "trim" has to be shorter than you wanted.

Long hair still needs a cut. Dusting the ends every few months keeps one width of hair from turning into a broom of split points. The shape is a separate question from the health of the ends. You can have healthy ends and no shape, a triangle of thick hair that swallows a collar. You can have a pretty outline made of broken hair. A useful visit does both: takes the damage off, and leaves the weight where a shirt, a neck, and a face can live with it.

Tell the chair the shortest you will accept, in a number or a landmark. "Just the ends" means different things to different hands. An inch off shoulder-length hair is maintenance. Three inches is a new style. Say the number. If you need the hair to stay in a tie, say the tie. If you need it off the neck because of heat, say the neck. Men lose trust in chairs when a mood on the other side of the cape removes length they had spent a year growing. The sentence at the start prevents that. Repeat it if the scissors move higher than you expected.

Layers belong where the hair is heavy. A one-length cut on thick hair triangles: tight at the crown, wide at the ends, hotter than it needs to be. A few long layers inside, not a shag, let a collared shirt sit without a cape of hair on it. The outline stays long. The interior breathes. Fine hair wants the opposite, fewer layers, because each removed section is a place the scalp shows. Say if a previous cut left you see-through. The repair is patience and a blunter interior, not another round of texture.

Split ends travel. They do not stay politely at the bottom waiting for a symbolic snip. If you wait a year, the damaged portion may be two inches, and cutting less than that leaves the splits to continue. That is the hair, not a barber being aggressive. You can look at a single strand in the light and see the white dot where it has divided. If you see that dot an inch up, the cut has to pass the dot. Keeping the dot for sentimental length keeps the problem.

In the chair, tie the hair with a soft band if you are only there for a beard or a neck cleanup. A dry elastic left in through a service snaps lengths you meant to keep, and you will find the broken pieces on the cape and blame the clippers. For a real cut, wear it down and detangled. Knots hide length. The chair cuts the knot and you think they took more than they did. Come in combed through, even if it is not styled. Time spent unpicking mats is time not spent on the outline.

Humidity hangs long hair in sections if the ends are dry, and swells it into one mass if the hair is thick and healthy. Miami afternoons are a useful test, not a crisis. A light conditioner on the ends, a loose tie when you are working, and no hard elastics at the same spot every day will do more than a new product line. Breakage at one height, all the way around, is usually a hair tie, not a haircut. Move the tie's position. Sleeping in a tight bun does the same damage higher up.

Between full cuts you can dust nothing, or you can have the very ends cleaned if they are visibly split. Do not thin the outline at home. Long layers cut by a mirror and a lucky hand go shorter in front than in back, and then the chair inherits a slope. If the front is in your mouth, book a fringe visit. Protect the back. The back is where length is measured, and it is the part you cannot watch while you cut.

It suits a man who will detangle, who will tolerate hair on his neck or tie it with some care, and who understands that the photograph of length includes the unphotographed months of awkward growth. It does not suit a desire for zero maintenance. Long hair is a modest daily chore and an occasional precise cut. Skip the chore and the cut gets more expensive in inches. Keep the chore and the visits are short, calm, and almost boring. Boring is what you want. The drama belongs to people who waited a year and then argued about physics.
