The lip, the nose, and the ears
Hair in the nose and ears is part of a finished cut for a lot of men. It should be trimmed, not waxed bloody, and not ignored until it is a conversation.
A finished face includes the places people pretend not to notice until they do. Hair in the nose and the ears is part of a cut for a lot of men. It should be trimmed, not waxed until it bleeds, and not ignored until it becomes the conversation. Scissors or a small trimmer do the job. A deep pull that tears the skin inside the nose does not. If you are on blood thinners or you bleed easily, say so before anyone goes near the nostril. A nick in there is a long ten minutes for a detail that could have waited.
The ears grow hair back fast, especially as the hair on the head goes gray and coarse. That is ordinary. It is a normal add to a beard visit, not a separate philosophy and not a reason for shame in the chair. Trim what sticks out of the ear and what catches light on the rim. Do not chase every fine hair down the canal. If the skin of the ear is already nicked or sunburned, say so. Ears stick out of hats and they burn in Miami. Sunscreen on the rims is more useful than a closer trim. A spot on the ear that changes is a dermatologist, not a closer pass with the trimmer.
The lip under a mustache gets dry and then cracks. The hair hides the crack until coffee or a smile opens it. A plain balm at night is the care. Picking the crack makes it a scar you will still see when the mustache is short. Scissor the hair that hangs over the lip so you can drink without a strainer. Leave the body. A dry razor across the lip, against the grain, is how the mustache disappears and the skin gets raw in the same minute. You cannot cut a handlebar out of two weeks of growth. If the corners are not there, wax will not invent them. Wax on a short mustache looks wet.
When the cheeks are shaved and the mustache stays, stop at a clear border. A fade from mustache into a bare cheek looks dirty if it was not a choice. A goatee keeps the mustache and the chin and takes the cheeks off on purpose. The connection at the corner of the mouth is the design. If that corner is patchy, the circle breaks. Short length hides a weak corner better than a long outline around a hole. Oil will not plant the missing hairs. A few drops on a damp mustache can keep gray wires from standing off the lip. They still get scissored. Yellow on the mustache is often smoke, coffee, or product. Wash it. Do not dye it the morning of a lineup if you have never done it. The skin stains.
The nose and the mustache share sweat. In this climate a mustache holds salt the way a hat holds it on the scalp. Rinse it when you wash your face at night, and in the morning if you trained. A gentle cleanser, not a scrub up the nostril. Bar soap leaves the lip tight, which you then feel as a crack and treat with more picking. If you get ingrowns where the mustache meets the cheek, stop shaving that border so close. One pass with the grain. A guard if you need to. Digging inside the nose or along the lip with tweezers is how a small hair becomes a sore.
Ears and the lip still take sun after you leave. A light screen on the rims, the nose, and the neck belongs with the balm on a dry lip. A mustache does not shade the nose, and a cap does not cover the ear. The burn shows up as tightness that night and gets blamed on the trimmer. Often it was the sun, an hour later. Cover the skin so the trim stays a small clean finish.
Ear hair and nose hair are not a medical project and they are not a joke the chair needs help telling. Point if you care. Say if you do not want them touched. Some men want the ears cleaned every visit and the nose left alone. That is a clear instruction. What is not clear is hoping it happens while also flinching and then being surprised. Bleed easily, say it. Recent sunburn on the ears, say it. A fresh cut on the lip from your own razor at home, say it, so nobody draws a second line through it.
If a sore inside the nose does not heal, or an ear spot bleeds or changes, have a doctor look. Trimming is not a biopsy and waxing is not a treatment. The chair can keep the obvious hairs from becoming the first thing someone sees across a table. The lip can stay soft enough to smile without splitting. That is the whole standard. Finished, not bloody, and not a speech.
