Circle beard: mustache and chin, connected
A circle beard joins the mustache to a rounded chin and takes the cheeks off. The connection at the corner of the mouth is the design.
The corner of the mouth is where a circle beard either exists or does not. A circle beard is a mustache joined to a rounded chin beard. The cheeks come off. Everything else is secondary to that join. If the corner fails, you do not have a circle. You have a mustache and a chin piece that happen to share a face, and the gap between them will be the first thing a person sees when you talk.
Look at the corner before you commit, with a few days of growth, in a mirror and not in someone else's photo. If it is patchy, the circle breaks into two pieces every time your mouth moves. A short length hides a weak corner better than a long one, because there is less outline around the gap. If the corner is actually bare, do not ask the chair to draw a connection that the follicles will not support. A goatee with a deliberate, even gap is the honest alternative. Say you would rather hear that the corner is too thin than wear a broken circle for a month.
Keep the bottom round unless you asked for a point. The name is the shape. A point turns the circle into a different beard, usually an accidental goatee. The roundness should follow your chin, not a compass circle that ignores where the bone ends. Too wide, running toward the corners of the jaw, and you are heading for a full beard that is missing its cheeks. Stay near the mouth. The negative space on the cheek is what makes the round chin read as a choice instead of as a beard you forgot to finish.
The lip still has to be short enough to eat. A connected beard is not permission for a curtain. The connection lives at the corner, beside the mouth. It is not a license for the mustache to cover the lip. Scissor the hair that hangs over the lip and leave the body of the mustache, so the corner has hair to join. A circle with a shaved-off mustache is just a chin beard. A circle with a mustache in your coffee is a circle you cannot use. Both failures are common because people say "connected" and forget the lip is a separate cut.
Line the cheeks at the same height. A circle that climbs on one side looks like a missed spot, because that is what it is. If one cheek grows lower, match the higher side down to the growth you actually have, rather than shaving a bite out of the dense side to force a climb. You will notice a slightly lower, even circle less than you will notice a bald scoop on one cheek. Close, even, and on your real growth is the standard. A stencil that your face cannot fill is a mask with a round hole in it.
Say the word circle if you mean this shape. Goatee, in a lot of chairs, allows a gap or a point. Circle means connected at the corner and round at the bottom, cheeks off. If you say "short beard" you will leave with cheeks still on. The notes are the place to prevent that argument. Connected at the corners. Bottom round. Cheeks off to here, and show the height with a finger. Mustache off the lip but not off the face. If the corner is thin, stop and tell me before you shave a path through it.
At home, the corner is the piece you ruin. A little cleanup that wanders into the smile line disconnects the circle, and you cannot pencil the hair back. Clean the cheeks and stop before the corner. Do not narrow the chin into a point over the sink because one side looked longer in bad light. If the bottom has gone square from being ignored, take a light scissor pass back toward round, or book. Do not reset the whole beard to stubble because the circle got muddy. Muddy means the cheeks grew in. Clean the cheeks. Leave the connection.
Then smile, on purpose, in the mirror before the cape comes off. The connection that looks perfect with a straight face and splits when you talk is not a circle. It is two patches and a wish. Ask for the shorter length if the smile opens a hole. Ask for the gap, clean and even, if there is nothing in the corner to join. Leave with a shape you can still see while you are speaking. That is the whole test, and it takes ten seconds in the chair and several weeks to grow back if you skip it.
