Where the fade should meet the beard

The fade and the beard are one outline. If they miss, you get a tuft in front of the ear or a bald ditch.

Look at the front of the ear. That inch is where a fade and a beard either agree or argue. They are one outline. If they miss each other you get a tuft in front of the ear, or a bald ditch where the fade cut through the beard. Both show the moment you turn your head. That is why people notice them in the car, after they only checked the mirror straight on.

Say it in the notes in words that cannot be swapped. Fade into the beard means the sideburn disappears into the beard length. There is no gap. The hair gets longer as it comes down, from the fade into whatever guard you keep on the cheek. Stop the fade above the beard means a clean gap: the fade ends, there is a stop, and the beard starts lower. Low fade, by itself, does not choose. A low fade can crash into the beard or park above it. You have to pick. If you do not, the chair will guess from the growth you walked in with, and the guess may not be the outline you wear to work.

The handoff is a short gradient, not a step, when you asked for "into." The longest length of the fade should meet the beard over a small distance, flicked out, not chopped into a shelf you can feel with a fingertip. If the beard is a 2, the fade cannot die at skin a millimeter above a hard wall of that 2. Something has to live between them. If you want the contrast of a hard stop, that is the "above" choice, and the gap has to be clean on both ears. Clean on the ear that was checked, and fuzzy on the other, is the usual miss. Ask for both.

A burst fade is a different drawing. It puts an arc over the ear and leaves the beard heavy, so the fade bursts out around the sideburn instead of dropping in a straight horizontal line. Do not expect that arc from the words low fade. Say burst if you want it. And if you shaved the beard off yesterday, there is nothing to burst around. Grow the beard about a week, then book. A burst cut into bare skin is only a curved skin fade with a shadow where a beard used to be. The beard is the reason for the shape. Without it, ask for a regular fade and grow into the burst next time.

Ears are not a matched set. One sticks out more. One sits higher. The hair in front of one grows lower. The meeting point has to be judged on each ear, then checked for balance, not copied with a ruler from a diagram. An ear that protrudes needs the fade to follow it, or a tuft hides in the pocket in front and appears when you turn. If you have had that tuft before, say so. It is the most common miss, and it is cheaper to prevent than to discover under a car visor.

After a good meet, leave the trimmer out of that inch. "Cleaning in front of the ear" at home opens the ditch the chair just closed. If one hair sticks out, scissor the hair. Do not mow the gradient. Also do not shave the beard the night before a fade and expect the outline to still make sense. Tell the chair what you did. A week of beard is a workable partner. A morning shave is a different head. If you wear the beard at a 1 and the fade very high, say both numbers. The distance between them is either a design or an accident, and only you know which you booked.

Check both ears in a mirror before you stand up. Turn your head. Feel the front of the ear. A step you can feel is a step sunlight will show. If one side has a tuft and the other has a gap, say so while the cape is on. It is a short correction in the chair and a two-week annoyance if you find it later, because the beard side and the fade side grow out at different speeds and the mistake gets louder before it gets better.

Put one sentence in the notes and say it again out loud. Fade into the beard, no gap. Or stop the fade above the beard, clean gap. Or burst, arc over the ear, beard left heavy. The beard has been grown for this. Then look, both sides, before you leave. The haircut and the beard are one outline, or they are an argument you will keep having every time you pass a window. You should know which one you asked for while you are still in the chair.
